She Knows The Business
Life was in essence the same as it was for Tobie as it was in any girl other third generation colony world growing up. There were harvests and schooling and winter festivals, creek swimming and nights spent catching lightning bugs. She married her sweetheart straight out of school and set to starting a family in the same grain laden plains that she'd grown up in. By the time her son Casey was born, Hobe's shipping business had caught on from scratch and he'd begun travelling extensively running cargo. Again, not that dissimilar from hundreds on thousands of other girls living the same straight from the prairie life.
The normalcy ended there. Shortly after Casey's first year a number of medical ailments assaulted the boy. Seizures and deathly allergies, breathing ailments and crippling fevers that were explained away as side effects of everything from residual treatments to the livestock herds when Tobie was younger, to viruses and bacteria infections. The more the illness took a hold of Casey's life, the longer and farther Hobe ran from the problems, the more distanced the family became. Casey's death ultimately put the final nails in the coffin that ended her marriage and left Tobie looking at a now very empty life.
There was nothing there in the fields. Nothing left in the home. Leaving on the first shuttle seemed to be the right thing to do. There was more than enough missed time to make up for and a life to explore that had never quite begun.
Character Personality
Aside from brief bouts of depression, Tobie has come to peace with herself after two years of ship hopping. She's taken up communicating with her ex-husband on occasion for the sake of civility and has kept contact with her parents who have stubbornly stuck to their plot of land.
Tobie has a magic knack with numbers and a glib tongue. She's sharp as a knife when it comes to reading body language, but a little rusty when it comes to more mundane interactions. There's still a lot to do and see that she's willing to roll the dice on. Not a lot left to really be afraid of anymore. She harbors no love for drinking and little more for fighting. When the mood calls for it Tobie can be very plucky and playful.
